Routes

The Wye Valley in a campervan.

Up the river from Chepstow Castle to the bookshops of Hay-on-Wye, crossing the border more times than you would think. A gentle Wye Valley campervan route for a long weekend.

By Josh and Jenny · Updated 25 October 2026

Short answer: our Wye Valley campervan route runs from Chepstow up the A466 past Tintern Abbey to Monmouth, then on to Hay-on-Wye. The A466 is about 30 miles and crosses the England and Wales border three times. Allow two or three days. From Monmouth, the narrow lanes over the Gospel Pass suit small vans only; big vans should take the A-roads round via Hereford. Sleep on campsites.

The Wye Valley campervan route, stop by stop

  1. Chepstow. Start at Chepstow Castle, an 11th-century Norman castle above the River Wye. The A466 meets the M48 at junction 2, so it is easy to reach from the Severn crossing.
  2. St Arvans. North past Chepstow Racecourse.
  3. Tintern. Tintern Abbey, a 12th-century abbey, sits right beside the road. This is the classic Wye Valley view.
  4. Llandogo and Bigsweir. The road crosses the river and the border at Bigsweir Bridge, opened in 1827 as part of the turnpike road. The old turnpike house is still beside it.
  5. Redbrook. Another border crossing. The A466 crosses between England and Wales at three places: Buckholt, Redbrook and Bigsweir.
  6. Monmouth. The road crosses the Wye at Wye Bridge. Monnow Bridge is the UK's only remaining fortified river bridge, now open on foot only, so park first and walk.
  7. On to Hay-on-Wye. See the two options below.
  8. Hay-on-Wye. The book town on the border, and a lovely place to end with a wander.

Monmouth to Hay-on-Wye: two ways

Small vans: the Gospel Pass. The RAC's Border Country trip goes from Monmouth by narrow lanes over the Gospel Pass, the highest road in Wales, and drops down to Hay-on-Wye. It is beautiful and it is a mountain lane: single track in places with sheep, cyclists and walkers. Fine in a small camper with a calm driver, not somewhere to meet a tractor in a long motorhome.

Big vans: round by the A-roads. The A466 itself carries on north from Monmouth towards Hereford. From there, main roads run west to Hay-on-Wye. It is longer but far easier. Check the exact route in your planner for your van's size.

Where to sleep

This route crosses between Wales and England, and in both, sleeping in your van on land you do not own needs the landowner's permission. Book campsites along the river or near Monmouth and Hay-on-Wye. National Park authorities on both sides of the border say the same thing in their own areas: Eryri does not allow overnight stays in car parks, and the Lake District says the only legal places for campervans to stay overnight are formal campsites. The Gospel Pass runs through the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, so treat it the same way.

The Wye Valley is popular with canoeists and walkers, so riverside campsites fill up in summer. Book ahead. For more on the rules, see our wild camping in the UK guide.

Van-size warnings

  • A466: a proper A-road and fine for most vans, but it is a winding valley road. Riders report poor surfaces in places on the Welsh side and a long hill between Tintern and Monmouth.
  • Tintern: the road runs right past the abbey, and it gets busy. Use the car park rather than stopping on the road.
  • Monmouth: Monnow Bridge is foot traffic only. Follow the signs for parking.
  • Gospel Pass: small vans only, in our view.

Fuel and water

Chepstow, Monmouth, Hereford and Hay-on-Wye are all towns where you can fill up. There is little between Monmouth and Hay if you take the Gospel Pass, so fill before you leave Monmouth. Fill water and empty waste at your campsite.

A two-day plan

DayRouteSleep
1Chepstow Castle, Tintern Abbey, Llandogo, Bigsweir Bridge, Redbrook, MonmouthCampsite near Monmouth or in the lower valley
2Gospel Pass (small vans) or the A-roads via Hereford (big vans) to Hay-on-WyeCampsite near Hay-on-Wye, or home

With a third day, slow down. Walk a stretch of the river, hire a canoe, or spend a full morning in Hay's bookshops. The lower valley between Chepstow and Monmouth is short in miles, so it rewards stopping rather than driving.

Before you go

  • Book a campsite. Summer weekends are busy with walkers and canoeists.
  • Decide on the Gospel Pass before you leave. Look at it on a map with your van's size in mind, not when you are already in the lanes.
  • Allow time for Tintern. It is the busiest stop on the A466. Go early.
  • Remember the border. You will cross between Wales and England several times. It makes no difference to driving, but local rules and council websites change as you go.

Questions

How long is the Wye Valley drive?

The A466 Wye Valley Road is about 30 miles in total. Chepstow to Hay-on-Wye takes longer, depending on whether you take the Gospel Pass or go round.

Can I take a motorhome over the Gospel Pass?

We would not take a large one. It is a narrow mountain lane. Go round by the A-roads via Hereford instead.

Can you wild camp in a campervan in the Wye Valley?

Not without the landowner's permission. In England and Wales, use campsites.

Where should I stop on the Wye Valley drive?

Chepstow Castle, Tintern Abbey, Bigsweir Bridge, Monmouth and Hay-on-Wye are the highlights.
