Short answer: The South West Coastal 300 is a 300 mile circular route through Dumfries and Galloway and into South and East Ayrshire. You can join it anywhere and drive either way; Dumfries is a handy start from the south. Allow 5 to 7 days in a campervan. It is quieter than the NC500, mostly on country roads, and you should use campsites rather than laybys.
The South West Coastal 300 at a glance
The SWC300 is the route for people who want a Scottish road trip without the NC500 crowds or a nine-hour drive north. The South of Scotland Destination Alliance describes it as "a 300 mile circular driving route" through Dumfries and Galloway, parts of East Ayrshire and the South Ayrshire coast. It takes in the Solway coast, the Machars and the Rhins peninsulas, Galloway Forest Park and the Ayrshire coast up to Culzean.

Stops in order
A suggested order from Dumfries, using the towns named by the official SWC300 site and Fiona Outdoors' trip report. You can easily cut this into a northern and southern half.

Fiona Outdoors drove the loop over three days and suggests a week would suit it much better, which matches the official itineraries.
Where to sleep
Scotland's access rights cover camping on foot, not in a vehicle. Aberdeenshire Council and Highland Council both say motorhomes and campervans are excluded from access rights, and Dumfries and Galloway follows the same national Scottish Outdoor Access Code. Use campsites, holiday parks and designated motorhome stopovers, and treat roadside overnight parking as a favour from the landowner, not a right. Kirkcudbright, Portpatrick and Sanquhar were the overnight towns on Fiona Outdoors' trip. Check before you go: see our wild camping guide and motorhome aires guide.
Fuel, water and van-size notes
- Fuel and big shops are easiest in Dumfries, Stranraer, Girvan and Ayr. Fill up when you pass rather than waiting for the light.
- The route "sticks as much as possible to quiet country roads", in Fiona Outdoors' words. That is the appeal, but some are narrow. Drive the peninsula spurs slowly in a big van.
- Fill water and empty waste at campsites. Our water and waste guide has the details.
