Air fryer recipes for the van.

Air fryer campervan recipes that work in a small basket, and the honest power maths before you plug one in.

Short answer: an air fryer is great in a campervan on electric hook-up, but it draws a lot of power. Ninja lists its 5.2 litre Air Fryer MAX at 1,750 watts, which is roughly 146 amps from a 12 V battery through an inverter. So most vans use one on hook-up, or only with a large lithium battery and a 2,000 W or bigger inverter. The recipes below are quick, so the fryer runs for as little time as possible.

How much power an air fryer uses

Before any air fryer campervan recipes, the power. An air fryer is a heating element and a fan, and the element is hungry. As an example, Ninja's own product page lists the Air Fryer MAX (AF150UK, 5.2 litres) at a wattage of 1,750 watts. Smaller and larger models vary, so check the rating plate on yours: it is printed on the underside or back.

Here is what 1,750 W means in a van, worked out with simple maths:

Where the power comes fromRough current
230 V mains hook-upAbout 7.6 A (1,750 ÷ 230)
12 V battery through an inverterAbout 146 A (1,750 ÷ 12), more once you add inverter losses

The element switches on and off to hold the temperature, so the average draw over a cook is usually lower than the peak. As a rule of thumb, though, plan for the full rating. Twenty minutes at 1,750 W is about 580 Wh, or roughly 50 Ah from a 12 V battery before losses. That is a big slice of a 100 Ah battery for one tray of chips.

Your inverter has to handle the full rating with some headroom, and the cables between battery and inverter have to be sized for that current. Our inverter size guide covers this, and the solar and battery calculator shows whether your system can carry it day to day.

On hook-up or off-grid

On hook-up an air fryer is easy, as long as the site supply can take it alongside anything else you are running, like a heater, kettle or water heater. Hook-up bollards are limited in amps and will trip if you overload them. Our guide to electric hook-up explains how to add up what you have on.

Off-grid it is possible with a large lithium battery bank, a pure sine wave inverter rated well above the fryer, and enough solar or alternator charging to put the energy back. If you are not sure, keep the air fryer for hook-up nights and cook on gas when you are wild camping. In the Roam app, the electrics planner lets you add an air fryer to your power budget and see the battery and inverter it needs, and the van recipes filter hides air fryer recipes when you tell it you have nothing electric.

Air fryer campervan recipes

These all fit a 4 to 5 litre basket and serve two. Times are a guide: small fryers vary, so check a few minutes early.

Sausages and crispy potatoes

About 25 minutes, one basket.

You need: 400 g small potatoes, 1 tbsp oil, 1 tsp dried rosemary or mixed herbs, 6 sausages, mustard to serve.

  1. Halve the potatoes, toss them in oil, herbs and salt, and air fry at 200°C for 10 minutes.
  2. Shake the basket, add the sausages on top and cook for another 12 to 15 minutes, turning once, until the sausages are cooked through and the potatoes are golden.

Crispy spiced chickpeas

A snack from a tin, about 15 minutes.

You need: 1 tin chickpeas, 1 tbsp oil, 1 tsp smoked paprika, a pinch of salt.

  1. Drain the chickpeas and pat them as dry as you can with kitchen roll.
  2. Toss with oil, paprika and salt, then air fry at 200°C for 12 to 15 minutes, shaking twice, until crunchy.

Halloumi, pepper and courgette wraps

Vegetarian, about 15 minutes.

You need: 225 g halloumi, 1 pepper, 1 courgette, 1 tbsp oil, 1 tsp dried oregano, 4 wraps, hummus or yoghurt.

  1. Slice the pepper and courgette, toss in oil and oregano, and air fry at 200°C for 8 minutes.
  2. Add the sliced halloumi and cook for another 5 to 6 minutes until golden at the edges.
  3. Pile into wraps with hummus or yoghurt.

Chicken thighs and sweet potato wedges

About 25 minutes. Use boneless thighs so they cook evenly.

You need: 4 boneless chicken thighs, 2 sweet potatoes, 1 tbsp oil, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 1 tsp garlic granules.

  1. Cut the sweet potatoes into wedges, toss in half the oil and spices, and air fry at 190°C for 10 minutes.
  2. Rub the chicken with the rest of the oil and spices, add it to the basket and cook for 14 to 16 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through with no pink in the middle.

Salmon with lemon and green beans

About 12 minutes, and almost no washing-up if you use a liner.

You need: 2 salmon fillets, a handful of green beans, 1 tsp oil, 1 lemon, salt and pepper.

  1. Toss the beans in oil and put them in the basket with the salmon on top, skin side down.
  2. Season, add lemon slices, and air fry at 190°C for 10 to 12 minutes until the salmon flakes easily.

Cinnamon apple slices

A quick pudding, about 10 minutes.

You need: 2 eating apples, 1 tsp butter or oil, 1 tsp sugar, ½ tsp cinnamon, yoghurt.

  1. Slice the apples thickly and toss with melted butter, sugar and cinnamon.
  2. Air fry at 180°C for 8 to 10 minutes until soft and caramelised at the edges. Serve with yoghurt.

Tips for a small basket

  • Don't overfill. Air needs to move around the food. Two smaller batches crisp better than one crammed one.
  • Use a liner. A reusable silicone or paper liner keeps the basket clean, which saves water.
  • Stow it safely. Let it cool fully, then wedge it in a cupboard or strap it down before you drive. It is heavy and has a glass or plastic window on some models.
  • Ventilate. Air fryers push out hot air from the back. Leave space around it and open a window.
  • Don't run it with everything else. On hook-up, switch off the kettle and electric heating while it runs.

Questions

Can you use an air fryer in a campervan?

Yes, on electric hook-up or with a big enough battery and inverter. Check the wattage on the fryer, make sure your inverter is rated above it with headroom, and work out how much battery a typical cook will use.

What size inverter do I need for an air fryer?

Larger than the fryer's rated wattage. For a 1,750 W model, that usually means a 2,000 W pure sine wave inverter or bigger, with battery cables and a fuse sized to match. See our inverter size guide.

Will an air fryer trip the hook-up?

It can, if you run it at the same time as other big loads on a low-amp supply. Add up the watts of everything switched on and keep under what the bollard allows.

Is an air fryer better than a gas oven in a van?

It heats up faster and is easier to clean, but it needs electricity and takes up cupboard space. A gas oven works off-grid. Many vans have neither, and cook everything on the hob.
